It's been a weird day and I'm glad it's over.
Made a huge dinner for 710, ate beef for the first time in a few months and it did NOT make my system feel as awesome as I was hoping, and got massively introspective and wandered around. I completely forgot this entire weekend that I had a Kant response paper due tomorrow(this) morning, so I had to hurriedly (can you actually do this to any avail with Kant? Not really, no) read GW II and write my flippin' response, which is only vaguely lucid. I was not really awake enough to focus. Here's hoping that Jenkins thinks I'm cute or something.
IN any case-- all of this is why the songs are late, but here they are.
As promised, I have a theme. It is bland and uninteresting, but it's a theme nonetheless, which I arrived at b/c I spent two hours today organizing my Itunes and my Ipod (which, in case you were wondering, is named Hannah's Black Power).
- The Thrill is Gone by B.B. King: I love this man and his music. "Lucille" is one of my favorite music moments in all of history. Anyway-- I've heard many covers of this song and this is my favorite. He's got this ridiculous voice and silly guitar and it's just great. Plus, you know-- sometimes the thrill is gone, and he expresses that feeling.
- Twisted Nerve by Bernard Herrman: This is the song that Elle Driver whistles as she's going to off the Bride in her sleep. It's creepy and strange and I love it. I think it's on here mainly b/c Red was whistling it last week one day as she came in the door and it got stuck in my head. Plus I've been jonesing for a Kill Bill viewing for a while. Anyway-- whistle away.
- My Old Flame by Billie Holiday: I had her greatest hits collection on my computer forever but all the titles were wrong for all the songs for some strange technologically catastrophic reason and was too lazy to change it until three days ago. So anyway-- I'd heard this song three or four times before without really knowing what it was properly called. It's good. She's so... emotional when she sings. She sang with her eyes closed all the time, which sometimes freaked people out. Random fact.
- Must I Paint You a Picture by Billie Bragg: My dad actually introduced me to Billy Bragg when I was a kid, but I never paid attention until a friend put one of his songs on a mix cd he made for me last year. I love his voice. It's so English. And he collaborated with Wilco in this incredible album that you must check out, Mermaid Avenue. One of the songs is called, "Walt Whitman's Nice" and my personal favorite is an ode to Ingrid Bergman, entitled, shockingly, "Ingrid Bergman". It's great.
- Have Love, Will Travel by The Black Keys: I will always love them, regardless of the historical context I have placed them in. One of the few bands associated with crazyFace that wasn't ruined for me. They consistently make me feel honky-tonk and awesome. A cleaner more lo-fi version of Kings of Leon, sort of. Except that they obviously love Sabbath and Howlin' Wolf, which is OK by me.
- It Ain't Me, Babe by Bob Dylan: I have to say I'm a sucker for the Joaquin Phoenix/Reese Witherspoon version of this song, blasphemous though that may be. However-- for the raw power of emotion, nothing beats Dylan. There's actual sorrow in it but also harsh, unyielding bitterness. Sometimes I need that expressed in song to coincide with my emotions. So: thanks, Dylan.
- Fools Rush in (The Kevin Shields Mix) by Bow Wow Wow: Would never have known this existed except for its inclusion in the Marie Antoinette soundtrack (coincidentally one of my favorite soundtracks ever). Kevin Shields (of the inexpressibly great My Bloody Valentine) is amazing and Bow Wow Wow is ridiculous and the two together equals: well, ridiculously amazing. (It's 2 am and I'm ravaged by beef and the common cold, okay? Excuse my hokey). Annabella Lwin's voice appeals to me on so many levels. Plus Shields's crazy string sound. Meh.
love (?).
h.
ps. if you missed SNL last night, youtube it or something, just the beginning. Andy Samberg dresses up like Diablo Cody at the Oscars and does a bit with Ellen Page. It's pretty hilarious. I would've felt guilty laughing except that I'm sure Diablo ok-ed it, b/c she and Ellen are tight (which is awesome).
